5 Tips Every Homeowner Needs To Know
By Jessica Truss | Published January 15, 2020
Homeownership isn’t always cheap! With the rising costs of living, finding ways to save money is something everyone should do.
Here are 5 things to do immediately that will reduce the maintenance costs of your home:
1. Use WD-40 to banish toilet stains
While you might usually get out the oil-based product to stop the door hinges squeaking, not it turns out to be a great cleaning product too.
Spray WD-40 on tough limescale stains in your toilet, and let it sit for a few minutes. Then scrub with a toilet brush and the stains will dissolve easily.
2. Save hundreds on your energy bills in 60 seconds
Did you know that greedy energy companies are ripping us off to the tune of £300 or more every single year? With another round of price hikes just around the corner, it could be a brutal winter for millions of us.
For decades there were hardly any options as greedy energy suppliers raked in the cash. Then one company showed up on Dragons’ Den and is changing everything…
Look After My Bills co-founders went into the Den and wowed the Dragons - walking away with the BEST deal in the history of the popular TV show.
The concept of Look After My Bills is simple: you sign up just once, and the service finds you a great deal (and switches you to it) every year.
And the best part is, Look After My Bills is FREE! They are helping over 200,000 households avoid the energy rip-off this winter.
3. Avoid costly refrigerator repairs
Refrigerator repairs can be costly, but most boil down to these two simple maintenance tasks that people forget to complete:
Unclog the fridge drain hole
Ever notice a pool of water in the bottom of your fridge? That can be caused by a clog in the small drain hole on the back interior wall of your fridge. It’s really easy to clean, simply open the fridge door and locate the hole. Then take a cotton bud and poke around inside until debris has been cleared.
Clean refrigerator coils
Condenser coils are located on the back of the fridge or across the bottom. When the coils are clogged with dirt and dust, they can’t efficiently release heat. The result is your compressor works harder and longer than it was designed to.
Clean the coils by unplugging your fridge (remember not to open the door while the fridge is off) and using a vacuum. Simply run the vacuum hose across the coils, being careful not to damage the coils.
Do this twice a year or more often if you have pets that shed.
4. Clean your tumble dryer lint filter/vent
That deceptively harmless fluff loves to snuggle down in your tumble dryer vents and filters. Dryer lint is extremely flammable if you let it build up, and large amounts can also cause damage to your machine.
Simple locate the vent or filter for your tumble dryer and clean with a brush of vacuum.
5. Check the gutters on your property
Gutters are an integral part of your property’s well being. They control the flow of rainwater to protect your roof, walls, foundation and landscape.
When neglected, expects say that gutters can turn into a nightmare. A gutter clogged with leaves, sticks and other debris can cause a leaky roof and damage to the interior or exterior of your home.
Although cleaning gutters is a task most of us can do ourselves , it can be dangerous work! You can hire a professional to do it for around £75. During a cleaning, a professional should remove all debris from the roof, gutters and downspouts while checking and repairing any loose bits.
